Got Resolutions?

by Erin Pflueger

Happy New Year! January is a great month to devote some extra time to self-reflection and goal setting – a time to look at our current lifestyle habits and identify areas for improvement – a time to think about who we are and who we want to be and a time to bridge the gap between the two! We all have things we want to work on, ways to better ourselves. This may be career driven, health driven, relationship driven, finance driven or anything else we value. I encourage you (if you haven’t already) to make one realistic resolution to improve your health. Consider health from a holistic perspective including the mind, body and spirit (not only physical health but also emotional, mental, spiritual and social health). Wellness goals are often focused on stress management, nutrition, and/or exercise. If you have picked one of these areas, be sure to create a SMART (specific, measurable, attainable/assignable, realistic and timely) goal in order to see greater success. Try to not be overly ambitious; behavior change is all about small steps.

Examples of SMART goals:
1. For eating out: Reduce eating out to only one time per week OR bring lunch to work two days per week instead of zero.

2. For general nutrition: Eat three servings of vegetables per day five days out of the week.

3. For hydration: Increase water intake to five glasses per day instead of two.

4. For alcohol: Reduce alcohol intake to no more than one drink per night.

5. Increase exercise by taking a 30 minute walk three days per week.

See the following website for additional information and guidance on creating SMART goals

The staff here at Pinnacle is ready to help you reach your goals! Come in for a nutrition or wellness consultation and talk with your dietitian, trainer or therapist about how they can help you achieve your goals. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Cheers to the New Year,
