ASTYM® Therapy

by Marisella Queen, DPT, CLT

What does Astym® do?

Astym® treatment is a therapy that regenerates healthy soft tissues (muscles, tendons, etc.), and eliminates or reduces unwanted scar tissue that may be causing pain or movement restrictions.

What does ASTYM stand for?

ASTYM® (A’-stim) is a name like XEROX® or Google®. It is not an acronym or abbreviation. Astym® describes the mechanism by which the treatment works, by causing “a-stimulation” of the body’s natural healing response.

Astym® is a treatment that stimulates regeneration of soft tissue structures, including tendons and muscles. Through the Astym® process, unhealthy soft tissues are replaced with new, healthy tissues. Certified rehab professionals apply instruments on top of the skin to locate dysfunctional soft tissue, and to transfer pressure and shear forces to the underlying soft tissue structures. The protocols, the force, and direction of the treatment start a healing/regenerative response in tendons, muscles, and other soft tissue structures. Therapy is typically provided twice weekly for three to four weeks and is done in conjunction with specific stretching, functional exercises, and activity.

Physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, occupational therapists and assistants, and certified athletic trainers are the only providers who can become certified in ASTYM. You do not need a specific prescription for Astym®. If your insurance covers physical therapy, it covers Astym®. Learn more about Astym® Therapy.
