What Should I Expect at My First Visit?

What to bring

  • A prescription or referral from your physician if you have one.
  • A valid insurance card or claim information (motor vehicle or Labor & Industries).
  • Our new patient paperwork can be downloaded and printed or you can fill out in the clinic (if so, please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment).

What to wear to physical therapy

Please wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing that you can move around in. Active wear such as shorts, sweats, and t-shirts are most appropriate. We have locker rooms for your convenience.

First Appointment

Before we begin treating you we want to learn a little something about you so that we can better develop and manage your therapy. First, we’ll have you complete a health intake and personal information questionnaire. After that, your therapist will conduct an evaluation (usually 45 minutes to 1 hour). During the evaluation, your therapist will collect information about you, your injury, and any past or current medical information that may help in better treating you. Your therapist will also conduct a series of specialized tests to determine the extent to which your injury is limiting you and at what level to begin treatment.

Your overall health is important

We provide a health risk assessment (HRA) to determine the underlying cause of your condition, not just the symptoms, to help you optimize your health and wellness. Reviewing your health history, biometrics, and cardiovascular health helps us understand the “big picture” of your health. Your physical therapist will then conduct an evaluation which may include a series of specialized tests to determine the extent of your injury and at what level to begin treatment. At the end of your therapy session, the plan of care and any “homework” will be reviewed with you.

MyWellness

You will also receive a separate email from mywellness closer to your first appointment. We use mywellness https://www.mywellness.com/ to track your exercises while in physical therapy and you can track your activity outside of the clinic/gym.

Treatment Plan

Throughout your treatment, your rehabilitation team will educate you about your injury and the therapy process. They will work with you to ensure you feel comfortable with the planned treatments and empower you with exercises you can do at home. At the end of your therapy session, the treatment plan and any “homework” will be reviewed with you. Typically, therapy is scheduled for 2-3 times per week for 4-6 weeks or as prescribed by your doctor. Depending on the extent of the injury and your commitment, treatment can take less or more time. Your therapist will generate a letter to keep your doctor informed of your treatment plan and progress.

Team Approach

*Please note that our rehabilitation team consists of physical therapists, massage therapists, occupational therapists and physical therapy assistants. Physical therapy assistants (PTAs) are licensed and authorized to treat patients under the supervision of a physical therapist. At Pinnacle, we team treat, so it should not be unexpected to see a PTA several times before you recheck with your primary physical therapist. The PTAs ensure that the plan you made with your physical therapist is executed to produce the best possible results.

It is important to know that physical therapy can be provided only by qualified physical therapists or by physical therapist assistants working under the supervision of a physical therapist.
