The Weekender Memorial Day Edition

Looking for things to do this Memorial Day Weekend? Here are some area events you may want to check out:

OPEN MIC NIGHT

Date: Saturday, May 28, 2011
Time: 7:00 PM

Open Mic Night is held every 2nd and 4th Saturday starting at 7:00 p.m. Sign-ups for performers start at 6:30. Each night starts with a 45 minute set by a guest band (see list below), after which the nominally 15 minute performance slots start. All "family friendly" art forms are welcome. Donation suggested at the door.
E.J.'s catering is always on hand to offer a tasty buffet menu.

Cost: $10 plate and drink, $5 Glass wine, $3 Beer.

NORTHWEST FOLKLIFE FESTIVAL

The Northwest Folklife Festival, a celebration of ethnic arts and cultures, is held every Memorial Day weekend at the Seattle Center. The Northwest Folklife Festival is a festive, interactive event that will appeal to all ages.

Date: May 27 - 30, 2011
Time: 11 am to 10 pm (Fri, Sat, Sun), 11 am to 9 pm (Sun)
Venue: Seattle Center
Cost: It's free! Donations recommended and appreciated.

Here are just a few of the fun things to see and do at the Northwest Folklife Festival:
• The Crafts Marketplace - Folk craft booths featuring the Northwest's finest artisans.
• The Uncommon Market - You'll find folk and ethnic products from around the world.
• Living Green Courtyard - Learn about sustainability, purchase earth-friendly crafts, and listen to music on an all-local stage.
• Food Booths - Dozens of booths featuring food and drink from around the world (and the Northwest too).
• Dance & Music Panels and Workshops - Don't just watch, join in!
• Live Music & Dance - Choose from over 25 different stages and performance spaces and enjoy music and dance from all around the world.

The Northwest Folklife Festival offers hundreds of performances and workshops. There is music, dance performances, participatory dance, and storytelling. Here is just a sample of the diversity of music and dance that you can enjoy during the 2011 Northwest Folklife Festival:

MEMORIAL DAY CONCERT at the MUSEUM of FLIGHT

The Boeing Employees Concert Band will set the stage by performing patriotic music. At 1 p.m., Museum President and CEO Doug King will preside over a ceremony with City of Tukwila Mayor Jim Haggerton. Other special guests include Tuskegee Airmen veterans LeRoy Gillead, Ed Drummond and George Hickmann.
